Maktub (“Written”) dramatically fuses a stunning traditional Indo-Persian shamsa (solar disc) with Lubna Zahid’s modernist American “retelling” of the form. The cool colors, clean angles and static beauty of the traditional central motif are juxtaposed with an energetic calligraphic style and volcanic hues emanating outwards. The calligraphy obliquely references a fatalistic prophetic saying: “The pens have lifted. The pages have dried.”
